Academic Background & interests
Spencer is an experienced strength & conditioning coach with an advanced academic education and understanding of musculoskeletal injury rehabilitation, remedial soft-tissue techniques, human physical performance preparation, sports massage and performance nutrition.
With extensive experience in handling a range of clients, from recreational individuals acutely injured through accident, illness or injury to elite and professional athletes, Spencer holds a successful track record in the ability to help individuals across a multitude of age groups to commit to long-term health and fitness goals.
Spencer holds a PhD in Health Science (Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation) from the University of Warwick, an MSc in Strength & Conditioning Science from the University of Edinburgh, a BSc in Sport & Exercise Science from the University of Northampton and an Advanced Diploma in Sports Therapy and Sports Massage from the Sports Therapy Organisation.
Spencer is currently a member of the Royal Bermuda Regiment Training Team, an assistant coach for Bermuda Police RFC, plays the French Horn with the Royal Bermuda Regiment Band and is a professional member of the Bermuda Philharmonic Orchestra.
Athletic background
Spencer is a decorated former professional and International rugby union player. He played professionally for 10 years, 6 in the English Premiership (Bristol and Richmond). Playing on the wing and at fullback, Spencer was a member of the England Elite squad, during which time he represented England at the World Sevens in Paris and won three senior England caps against Australia, South Africa and New Zealand Maori. In 1999, he played in England’s warm-up matches for the Rugby World Cup but agonisingly missed out on selection for the tournament itself.
Spencer has also given thirteen years of service to Her Majesty’s Royal Marines and has played for the Royal Navy and the Combined Services (UK Armed Forces), as well as the Bristol Bears, Richmond RFC, the Bedford Blues and Nottingham RFC. Spencer still remains one of the highest capped players to represent the Royal Navy against the British Army at Twickenham.
